Lighting the Christmas Trees

This year’s lighting of the Christmas trees was followed by a wonderful performance of seasonal songs by pupils from Bugthorpe C of E School. It was a suitably chilly evening and after we enjoyed the singing, Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute welcomed us in to warm up with festive fare.
Thank you to everyone who contributed to this lovely event at the start of the Christmas period.
Jubilee Pasture project hosts a talk

Following various activities through the summer to increase the diversity of plant species at Jubilee Pasture (see the JP page), the project was very pleased to welcome Dan Carne of The Woodmeadow Trust to Kirby Underdale Village Hall. He gave an excellent talk about the importance of considering the understory plant species when planting trees.
By consciously establishing and managing flowers, rather than just allowing rank grasses, brambles and nettles to dominate, the conservation value of new or established woodland can be greatly increased. This combination of trees and flowers, which can be described as a woodmeadow, is part of the plan for Jubilee Pasture.
The talk was followed by drinks and a buffet, with an opportunity for people to read about progress at the site so far.
Jubilee Celebrations
2 June 2022
Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute hosted a wonderful party to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The amazing food and decorations were organised by Andrew and Susan Oldroyd, with a delicious array of trifles donated by parishioners. The meal was followed by lighting of a beacon as part of the national beacon ceremony. A disco then continued the celebration late into the evening. Thank you to everyone involved in making this event so special, and thank you to ERYC for supporting it with with their Jubilee funding.
Mug Painting for the Jubilee
May/June 2022
Make 'n' Take Ceramics in Bugthorpe kindly hosted three sessions for people to paint their own commemorative jubilee mugs. A grant from East Riding of Yorkshire Council allowed this to be free for all the children in the parish who chose to participate. The resulting mugs, and some bonus ceramic medallions, were wonderful. We hope everyone enjoyed the chance to get creative in this way.
Spring Flower Planting at
Jubilee Pasture
10th April 2022
As the first activity for Friends of Jubilee Pasture, volunteers came to plant donated spring flowers. Snowdrops, aconites and primroses were planted amongst the trees recently planted by Halifax Estates. Primroses and violets were planted in parts of the existing wooded area where ivy had been cleared.
Thank you to everyone who donated plants or came to help get them in the ground.

Bugthorpe CofE Primary School OFSTED report
16th February 2022
Congratulations to Bugthorpe C of E Primary School, our small but brilliant community school run by amazing and dedicated staff and teachers.
They were awarded the rating of 'Good' with feedback such as:
"Pupils are very proud of their school. Parents and carers say that their children cannot wait to get to school because of the exciting things they learn."
"Pupils’ very good behaviour contributes to a calm environment and good relationships. Pupils play well together in the school’s extensive grounds."
"Pupils know that they are listened to."
Litter Pick

Thank you to everyone that took part in this year's litter pick, thanks to everyone's hard efforts the village now looks smart and ready for spring!
34 bags of rubbish were collected, plus various other large items such as bits of a bumper and a tyre!
BugDrive

The first BugDrive was so much fun, and it was great to see so many people there.
Congratulations to all the winners of the evening...even to those who won for losing!
The evening raised just under £150.
This money will be put towards the village hall funds for new roofing.
Look out for the next BugDrive so you can have your chance to come down and compete!
MacMillan Coffee Morning

The MacMillan Coffee Morning proved to be a huge success again!

Birds and the Bees
Summer 2021
The Birds and the Bees Bugthorpe project went so well, and I don't know about you but I certainly saw an abundance of bees around the village this summer!
We hope your seeds and cosmos plants did well after a difficult start weather-wise, and both you and the insects enjoyed the flowers. I’ve got a lot of pleasure from watching the insect activity on sunny days through the summer.
My plants are looking a bit tired now but most are still flowering and the bumblebees have given way to butterflies. From the piles of husks under my sunflowers, I see they are now feeding something bigger than insects. For the other species, leaving some flowers to ripen seeds will provide free plants next year. You can either let them self-seed or you can collect the seed to sow elsewhere in spring.
According to the RSPB website, nest boxes should be cleared out in autumn. That could be any time from now once you’re sure the box is no longer in use. They suggest using boiling water to kill any parasites which may be harboured in the box, assuming you can get it down easily.

Bugthorpe's Village Walks
Thank you to everyone who took part in the August Bank Holiday Village Walk or who supported the Sponsored Walk on the same afternoon!
A perfect summers day allowed a gentle two mile walk with beautiful views rewarded by cake, wine and good company on return to the Village Hall.
The intrepid sponsored walk people completed the 14 mile walk between the villages of the Garrowby Benefice and were delighted to be enthusiastically welcomed back to Bugthorpe.
The event raised £484.97 which will be very well used repairing the circular commemorative windows in the gable ends of the Institute. A wonderful achievement from a very enjoyable afternoon – thank you to everyone.

National Open Garden Scheme 2021
The Rectory Open Gardens
Dr and Mrs P Verow, The Old Rectory, Bugthorpe would like to thank everyone who supported their Open Garden on Sunday 4th July. Despite the weather forecast of rain and wind, the sun shone almost all day and the garden looked it's best.
£1,050 was raised from 191 visitors who were also able to browse the plant and willow work stalls.
This wonderful sum will be distributed to various charities supported by the National Open Garden Scheme including Macmillan Cancer, Hospice UK, Marie Curie, Careers Trust, The Queen' Nursing Institute, Parkinson's UK, and Perennial and Horatio's Garden.
Tea & Cakes in the Village Hall
Also, thank you to everyone who supported the 'tea and cake' event at Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute, visiting gardens is obviously thirsty and hungry work!
£415.25 was raised during the day which will be donated to the charities mentioned above.
We were very grateful for the hard work of all the helpers and of course for the generosity of people who baked and donated the most delicious cakes, scones and buns. Many compliments were received about the food provided, also about our lovely village hall. People from other small villages asked how we manage to maintain the hall to such a high standard. A Memorial Hall to be proud of.
Bugthorpe's New Noticeboard
The noticeboard near the church gate has been replaced with one more than twice the size of the old one. Half will be used by the church and half by the parish council.
There will also be room for posters about village events, and notices from anyone in the village or surrounding area. If you would like to put up a small advertisement, please see Bob in the village shop to discuss suitability and to borrow the noticeboard key. Thanks are due to Bugthorpe and Kirby Underdale Parish Council, Halifax Charitable Trust, Bugthorpe War Memorial Institute, donors at the treasure hunt and generous private donors, for funding the noticeboard.
The church gate, which was damaged by a falling tree, has been wonderfully restored by Dan Parker and kindly installed on new gate posts by Halifax Estates Joiners.
Bugthorpe's Easter Bunny
Sunday 4th April 2021
We are reminded that Easter is approaching as new life is bursting out everywhere we look, and it won’t be long until the lambs are turned out in the fields.
We have received notification from a Bugthorpe burrow that the Easter Bunny is planning to visit the gardens of houses where little people live on Easter Sunday!
We know that everyone is very young at heart but our instructions were very clear that a surprise will only be left in the gardens of school goers and any adult peeping must be accompanied by a child.
If you live in Bugthorpe and have children, please keep an eye out on the morning of Easter Sunday for the poem delivered through your letter box by the Easter Bunny. Your little ones can then get ready to go on their egg hunt!
Please note, the eggs will be hidden somewhere out of site but relatively easy to find, if you have any trouble please contact us.
Bugthorpe's Litter Pick
21st March 2021
As you may be aware, Bugthorpe hosted a litter pick this past Sunday and the results were fantastic!
The impact of such a village effort is there for all to see as we not have rubbish and litter free hedge rows and verges. All together there were 32 bags of rubbish collected, and together with larger miscellaneous items weighed in at 107.5kg!!
We would like to say a huge THANK YOU and WELL DONE to all those who took part!
It really is amazing to see our community come together to keep this wonderful village looking the best it can.

Bird Boxes
After the tremendous demand for bird boxes we can safely say that the birds of Bugthorpe won't be short of somewhere to nest for spring!
45 boxes were delivered ready for the nesting season.

We would absolutely love to hear from you about the success of your bird box, and please feel free to send us any photo's you get.
Thank you to everyone who purchased a bird box (or two), this has been a fantastic results.
Now that the birds are well catered for we not turn our attention to the bees.

Photo and Picture Competition
Thank you to everyone who entered the competition, the pictures and photographs certainly demonstrated what a beautiful part of the world we live in.

Memory Bauble Christmas Tree

It was quite sad to turn off the lights and take the Memory Baubles down from the Christmas Trees, the village has looked bright and festive bringing some hope and cheer in strange times.
Thank you to everyone who made such beautiful baubles and for sharing precious memories. Most of the baubles survived wind, rain and snow and can now be collected by their owners. They will be put on a table under the shelter at the village hall next Saturday and Sunday, 16th and 17th January, ready for collection. Any that are unclaimed will be left in the porch at 4 Stephenwath Lane for people to collect at their convenience
We raised £213 has been sent to St Leonard’s Hospice in York, a wonderful result!
Estate Office Ladies Charity Santa Run

On 18th December 2020 the ladies from the Estate Office in Bugthorpe took part in a charity Santa run to raise money for Dove House Hospice.
The run went really well and didn't they all look great!
They were joined by Santa's little helpers to collect money on the day, and also had a Just Giving page.
We would like to say a massive congratulations and well done to Sue, Sarah, Tracey Pam, Rebecca and Julie for the efforts you all put into this and for the donations you have collected.
Thanks to all your generosity on the day and on the Just Giving page they managed to raise just over £1,400, which I think we can all agree is an amazing result! This money will make big differences for the people supported by Dove House Hospice.

Memory Bauble Christmas Tree Light Up!
Did you come out to see the grand light up? Or have you seen them since?
If you haven't you should pop down for a peek as they are absolutely beautiful.
100 of us created memory baubles, and so many of our loved and missed ones have been thought of this Christmas which brings such a warming feeling to our hearts.
Please feel welcome to go through the gate to take a closer look at everyone's efforts, as it would be a shame not to see them.
We are still playing around with the timings to get it perfect, but at the moment they are on between approximately 5.30pm and 9.30pm.
The next challenge - As we want to encapsulate these beautiful trees and memories we are hosting a festive photography challenge! Do you reckon you have got what it takes!

Bugthorpe's Harvest Collection

Bugthorpe's Harvest Collection was held between 19th and 23rd October and gave everyone the opportunity to donate food or money at the Bugthorpe Shop and Post Office.
This was to help raise money and collect food for Carecent in York. They are a breakfast centre for all homeless, unemployed and otherwise socially excluded members of our community
The event was organised by the website creators and so many of you showed your support that the results were just incredible!
Thank you to those who helped organise the collection, to Bob for letting us use the shop as a collection point and to Janet for delivering the food.

The World's Biggest Coffee Morning
The World's Biggest Coffee Morning was held on Friday 25th September on Bugthorpe Village Green.
The event was organised by Lady Halifax and, despite the rainy weather, many people came out to enjoy the event.
There were stalls selling local produce and cake.
This event is held each year to raise money for Macmillan Cancer Support.
Thank you to those who helped organise and attended the event.

Harrison's Stall
September 2020
Harrison Vale has set up a stall piled with wonderful bits and pieces. First this was held outside his house and then he expanded to the treasure hunt!
Harrison sadly lost his mother to cancer and is undertaking various fundraising activities to mark her birthday.
Harrison is planning on more stall sales at the end of the drive at Corner Farm, Bugthorpe, on weekend afternoons (if the weather is nice!) so if you are passing make sure to see if he is there.
Harrison has now raised more than £300 for Cancer Research. What a great result!
Bugthorpe's Treasure Hunt
19/09/2020
Bugthorpe's Treasure Hunt was organised to help raise awareness for the new website, but also to help raise funds for the new village notice board!
The weather was fantastic, and plenty of people came out to join us. 10 families submitted their treasure hunt answers and over 20 children took part in our scavenger hunt.
The scores and prizes have been awarded and you can find this on the website here.
£122.74 was raised on the day, which is a fantastic result.
A big thank you to those who organised and attended the event.
We would also like to say a big thank you to Pasture Farm Produce, who kindly donated Yorvale ice creams, which we sold for donations.
